History of Mitsubishi Motors | Vero Beach, FL

History of Mitsubishi Motors | Vero Beach, FL
The Mitsubishi company was founded in 1870 by Yataro Iwasaki with the help of his brother, son, and nephew. It was originally a shipping company, but over the years, the business expanded into other areas.

In 1914, the three-diamond trademark symbol for Mitsubishi was first used. Then in 1917, development of the Model-A passenger car started with the internal combustion engine manufacturing following in 1921.

Moving into the 1940s, Mitsubishi continued to grow with new factories and vehicles, like the three-wheel cargo carrier Mizushima, the Silver Pigeon scooter, and the Fuso bus.

In 1950, Fuso Motor Sales was established as the overall Mitsubishi company was divided into separate industries. This decade saw the production of the Henry J passenger car, the JH4 four-cylinder engine for the Jeep, and the Mizushima renamed the Mitsubishi-Go.

Moving into the 1960s, Mitsubishi launched the Mitsubishi 500, the 360 Van, the 360 Pickup, Colt 600, Minica, Colt 1000, and Debonair. These vehicles advanced Mitsubishi’s styling and presence across the globe.

The official Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was established in 1970 as part of the brand’s 100-year centennial. And, just a year later, the Dodge Colt, which was a joint venture with Chrysler, began sales in North America.

In 1981, Mitsubishi Motor Sales America is established to further the brand’s presence here in the United States. Later that decade, Mitsubishi opened a test laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan and a design center in Cypress, California. The brand also released the Mirage and Galant.

Over the next decade, we saw the debut of the first generation of the Lancer Evolution. In 1999, Mitsubishi set a new world record with an electric vehicle that ran 2,000 kilometers in 24 hours.
